Stand in awe
and sin not:
commune with your own heart
upon your bed,
and be still.4
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,
and put your trust in the Lord.5
Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.6
Thou hast put gladness in my heart7
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep
for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.8
—Psalms 4—
4
- Stand in Awe means gratitude
- Sin not means to refrain from self-loathing
- Commune with your heart means to meditate (for “the Kingdom of Heaven is within us” as well as “out there”)
- Upon your bed means before your rise; that waking state
- Be still means, not speaking in tongues
5
- It takes effort to keep oneself “unspotted from the world”; thus “righteousness” IS considered a sacrifice to God
- Putting our trust in God means He is our source, and we do that by remembering Him each morning by giving thanks (gratitude)—before getting out of bed
6
- Those who apply these techniques will experience God’s immediate, reciprocating love and light (i.e., countenance)
7
- One of the fruits of God’s countenance (i.e., the fruits of His light) is gladness or JOY
8
- We can do the reverse steps when we retire for the day and experience once more God’s peace and be able to sleep in safety
Point
That is how to commune with God.
